TABB: What's In It For You?

You're busy. TABB is obviously shorthand for something. You need such shortcuts! But what does TABB really stand for-and what can it do for you?

Let's make an assumption: You want the HVAC systems you design, build, and operate to meet the highest standards. That goes for retrofits, too. New or retrofit, you want the HVAC system to work with the greatest efficiency and effectiveness possible.

And: This applies to you and your clients (if you are an independent engineer) or to you and your employer (if you work inside a company). You want to make sure that the built system matches the design; you want to show that it works. That's where TABB comes in.

The Testing, Adjusting and Balancing Bureau's (TABB) certification program was established by SMACNA, a contractors' association, and SMWIA, the industry's worker organization. TABB has been created to certify supervisors and contractors engaged in testing, adjusting, and balancing of building environmental systems.

Note: Along with SMACNA and SMWIA members, TABB encompasses professional HVAC engineers who are members of ASHRAE.

Peace of Mind
Essentially, TABB certifies people and contractors who will do testing, adjusting, and balancing work for you. So why should you hire only TABBcertified professionals? Here are three key reasons:

  1. TABB is the only certifying agency associated with a national training effort. Our relationship with the International Training Institute of the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Industry is strong; we are even located in the same building! More than 165 training facilities will spend more than $55 million in 2003. We're unique-no one else can come close to our training programs!
  2. There's more to TABB certification than "passing a test." TABB Certified Professionals subscribe to a strict Code of Conduct. They pledge to regularly upgrade their skill level to meet cutting-edge technological advances in the heating, ventilation and air conditioning industry.
  3. There's still more to TABB. We've been working recently with the U.S. Army's Corps of Engineers to get TABB specifications written into their Standards. Along with the National Energy Management Institute, we've recently completed production on a CD-ROM, entitled "How IAQ Affects Your School".And, we continue to work closely with Dr. James Woods of the Building Diagnostic Research Institute on indoor environmental quality.

A Shortcut to Quality?
As you well know, there are no shortcuts to quality. But you also know that the best-designed HVAC system in the world is not worth anything…it's the delivered system that matters. TABB is your shortcut to taking that worthy design into reality-and proving that your company or client received, in the installed system, what you conceived and designed.

What do you gain when you specify testing by a TABB-certified contractor on your project? Thanks to our relationships and requirements, you gain value-added experience and training. Our stringent certification and testing process allows TABB to guarantee customers satisfaction.
